Abstract

Psychological disorders and the brain mechanisms underlying them are a central focus in biomedical research. This chapter explores the rationale for marmosets as useful models for addressing these questions and discusses exemplars of behavioral protocols in five major “Domains” of psychological and behavioral functions, within the context of the NIMH’s Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework. The marmoset models reveal much about the regulatory processes that mediate and modulate normal behavioral functioning. Furthermore, research with marmosets highlights structural and functional systems that may underlie psychopathology and point to treatment modalities that may ameliorate these conditions.
